Excerpt:

“Blue?” called Derrick. “Can you see if you can find some leaves? We’ll need both dry and wet. The area looks like it’s mostly pines, but I saw a few trees with foliage, so you can probably find enough. If you have no luck, anything that holds together well and can act as insulation will work.”

Blue set off to see what she could find. She hadn’t gone far, could still hear the others working, when she was grabbed from behind.

Blue struggled, but she was pinned against a large chest, her mouth covered by one of her captor’s hands. Her feet left the ground, and the man holding her carried her farther from their makeshift camp. He smelled clean, like pine and herbs, but the detail was discordant; she’d expect something more... pungent.

“Blue? Where did you go?” It sounded like Jason, but the blood pounding in her ears made it difficult for her to be sure. Blue twisted and bucked, trying to make some noise. Only her muffled grunts escaped, though, until she managed to catch a fallen branch with one of her feet, knocking it to the ground with a crash.

“Blue?” Jason called louder, and she could hear his steps growing closer.

“Make no noise,” whispered the stranger holding her. He had a deep voice, and his accent was strange, almost Russian sounding, but a little smoother. She’d never heard anything like it. Blue froze, terrified by the sound of that voice. He’d pulled them farther into the trees, disguising them in the shadows of the falling night.

Jason came into view, peering around himself, trying to find her. When he did spot them, his expression morphed from concern to rage.

“Let her go, now,” he said, shifting into a light crouch. His gaze remained fixed on Blue and her captor. Men, dressed like something out of a period movie in rough clothing and hardened leather armor, wove in and out of the shadows cast by the trees. Some had chainmail, and all of them were holding a weapon of some sort, knives, a few bows, even a sword. Blue tried to signal Jason, but she was held too tightly. They came on him from behind, and Jason was soon surrounded. He crouched lower, his shoulders tightening and fists curling, and one of the men, the one with the sword, stepped closer, his blade up.

Blue held her breath, everything in her stilling in anticipation of what would come next. Please don’t be stupid. After a moment Jason straightened and put up his hands, signaling he wouldn’t fight.

Author Bio:

Cecilia Randell is the pseudonym for a lady author that has not quite worked up the courage to give you all her real name. She loves a good story, and often finds herself thinking “what if…”, so decided to put some of her ‘what ifs’ down in words for others to, hopefully, enjoy.
